Sikkim, Darjeeling & Northeast India.


Delhi. Arrival to Delhi and transfer to hotel.

Day 02Old & New Delhi:  After the group has had sufficient rest we embark on a tour of Delhi which includes both the “Old” & the “New”.  We drive pass through the Raisina Hill to view Parliament House, The President House, past the imposing India Gate.  We shall visit various temples, mosques belonging to the Hindu & Muslim faith.  After lunch we tour Old Delhi which includes the imposing “Red fort” which was the palace of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan who ruled India.  We will also visit the largest mosque in India – Jama Masjed and “Raj Ghat” which is the memorial site of Mahatma Gandhi.  Evening we return to the Red fort to view the “Son et Lumire” which is a colorful lightshow and gives a brief history of the magnificent monument. 

Day 03: Delhi – Bagdogra – Darjeeling: We will proceed to the domestic airport to catch the flight to Bagdogra.  On arrival, we will drive to Darjeeling ( 3 hrs ) as we pass through tea gardens and small villages. Mayfair resort.

Day 04: Darjeeling: After breakfast we visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Tibetan Refugee Self help centre where you can get an opportunity to see wool being dyed and woven for carpet weaving.  In the afternoon we may take a short ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom on the famous toy train.  Completed in 1882 the railway connected Darjeeling with the rest of India.  Our ride, although short will give us a chance to admire the Batasia loop, one of four complete loops and five switchback maneuvered on this feat of engineering. Day 05: Darjeeling – Pemayangtse ( Sikkim ):  Early morning before breakfast we take an early morning trip to Tiger Hill to see the sunrise.  Tiger Hill is the highest spot in the area at 8,500 ft and is famous for its dawn views of the Eastern Himalaya.  On return, visit the famous Ghoom monastery which enshrines an image of “Maitreya”.  After breakfast proceed to Pemayangtse ( West Sikkim ) which is approximately a 4.5 hrs drive. .    Stop for formalities at the SikkimBengal border ( Melli ) as we get our Sikkim permits verified.   On arrival transfer to Norbugang Resort

Day 06: Pemayangtse:  Take a short walk to visit the premier monastery of Sikkim where you will see a magnificent wooden structure carved single handedly by the late abbot of the monastery the Ven Dunzin Rinpoche.  The structure took 6 years to built and is now considered a masterpiece.  We will also take a short nature walk into the forest to see the old  palace ruins of “Rabdentse.  In the afternoon we take a short drive to visit the holy Kechopalri lake and also witness the holy lake festival where thousands of pilgrims from all parts of Sikkim come to pay their respect to the local deities.

Day 07: Pemayangtse – Gangtok. After breakfast proceed to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. On arrival transfer to Norkhill hotel.


Day 08: Gangtok:
Today we will visit the local market and tour the local sights.  Places of interest include the Tashi view point where one can get a magnificent view of Mt. Kanchendzonga – the highest mountain in Sikkim and the third highest in the world, Enchey monastery.  It is important to note that while visiting monasteries you are requested to remove shoes before entering and to walk clockwise around the monastery and other holy structures like a “stupa”.  In the afternoon take a short drive to Rumtek monastery ( 45 minutes ) which was built to seat the “Karmapa” when he fled from Tibet.  The monastery is also a centre for higher Buddhist studies and has over 250 monks in residence.  Evening return to Gangtok.

March 7th Day 09: Gangtok – Jaldapara.  We will now descend down to the plains as we leave Sikkim and drive ( 5 hrs ) to Jaldapara National Park.  We will stay at a jungle lodge just a few kms outside the park

Day 10: Jaldapara:  Early morning take a ride on the elephants and explore the wildlife sanctuary.  In the afternoon take a jeep safari for wildlife viewing.

 

Day 11:  Jaldapara – Bagdogra – Guwahati – Kaziranga.  Early morning take one more ride on elephants and then drive to Bagdogra airport to catch the flight for Guwahati.  On arrival drive to Kaziranga National Park.

 

Day 12 - 13:  Kaziranga:  Wildlife viewing.  Viewing will be on elephant backs early morning and in jeeps during the afternoon. Wildgrass.

 

Day 14:  Kaziranga - Tinsukia:  Early morning after breakfast drive to Tinsukia which takes about 6 hrs.  Overnight Hotel.

 

Day 15: Dibru-Saikhowa Bio reserve.  After breakfast drive to the reserve for wildlife viewing.  The Bio reserve is a riverside reserve and hence wildlife viewing will be done on boats.  In the evening return back to the hotel.

 

Day 16: Tinsukia – Deban: After breakfast drive to Deban and make preparations for the trek into the Namdapha National park.  Overnight in jungle lodges.

 

Day 17 - 18. Namdapha National Park. Bird and animal watching will be done on foot as the jungle is very thick and special permission is being obtained to do this as we camp inside the park.  Please note porters, and cooks will be provided. Hence all you require to carry is your own personal items like water bottle, camera, etc.  Accommodations will be in deluxe tents and mattresses will be provided.  You are requested to bring your own sleeping bags.

Day 19: Trek back to Deban and overnight in jungle lodge as we leave the National park.

 

Day 20:  Deban – Dibrugarh – Delhi: After breakfast drive to Dibrugarh airport  ( 5 hrs ) to catch flight for Delhi and transfer to hotel


Day 21: DelhiAgra - Delhi:  After breakfast depart for Agra as we travel by road.  The drive is approximately 5 ½ hrs ( 205 kms ).  We visit the Taj Mahal & the Agra fort and spend the night.

 

Day 22: Drive back to Delhi, proceed to international airport, and catch flight home or futhert travels to other parts of India, if desired.

The group will be traveling in private deluxe jeeps ( Toyotas ) and will not be sharing it with any other groups.  The roads are paved and well maintained during most of the travel but there may be a few spots where you will encounter some bumps, but I feel this adds more adventure. Nevertheless we will be using the best available transport along with experienced drivers.

*Note: We are staying in a tented camp in Namdapha because wildlife viewing will have to be done on foot as the forest is very thick.. But we are also fortunate to have this opportunity to be inside this wonderful wildlife park.

I sincerely believe that I have put together a program that will allow the group to experience a section of India's wildlife and culture. 

The total land cost is USD 4500.

Included: All accommodation in deluxe hotels, lodges, tents on twin sharing basis with all meals, all land transfers and transportation in deluxe coaches and jeeps, English speaking guide, all necessary fees.

Excluded: All air fares, internat and external, items of personal nature like alcohol, soft drinks, laundry, gratuities, Arrunachal Pradesh special interline permit USD 50/person.
